Georgia lawmakers propose tax overhaul plan

ATLANTA (AP) - A tax plan by Georgia lawmakers would eliminate the annual property tax on motor vehicles, but it would more aggressively collect the sales tax people must pay on Internet purchases.

The plan introduced Monday by a special committee is a scaled-backed proposal from last year's abandoned attempt to overhaul the state's tax code.

Under the plan, residents would pay a 1-time title fee to the state on newly purchased vehicles, rather than pay an annual vehicle property tax.

Internet retailers would also have to collect the state's sales tax from buyers. Right now, some Internet sites leave it to consumers to pay the Georgia sales tax on their purchases, and many do not comply.

Lawmakers didn't publicly release their estimates on how much the tax changes would cost.
