Pikeville community gathers to support keeping Taft Youth Center open

Posted: Updated:

PIKEVILLE, BLEDSOE CO., TN (WRCB) - As time draws near for the Taft Youth Center closure, many in the Pikeville community continue to rally together to keep its doors open.

First Southern Baptist Church is calling on a higher power to help save the center.

Nearly 200 jobs are on the chopping block as funding has once again become a hurdle for the center.

As the Recreation Director and football coach for the Taft Youth Center, Robert Worthington says prayer, and a little hope will keep the center from closing.

State records show, the Taft Center has one of the best rehabilitation success rates among centers of it's kind.

In February, Governor Bill Haslam said he wanted to quote streamline government.

As for the jobs being lost at Taft, the Governor expects many of those workers to be hired at a new prison being built in Bledsoe County.
