Georgia prepares for opening of turkey season

ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia wildlife officials say turkey populations are strong in most regions of the state ahead of the start of the March 24 hunting season.

Kevin Lowrey of the Department of Natural Resources said poultry production appears good in the Piedmont, Blue Ridge and Ridge and Valley regions of Georgia.

Turkey reproduction has trailed along the coastal plain because of drought conditions. Still, Lowrey said there are 2-year-old birds left from 2010 that hunters can target this year.

The state's turkey population is estimated at 335,000 birds.
