NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A lawyer for opponents of a Republican redistricting plan confirms to The Associated Press that the group has filed a lawsuit to halt the Republican plan.

Attorney Bob Tuke, a former state Democratic Party chairman, says the lawsuit was filed in chancery court in Nashville on Friday.

Tuke says the legal case is based on the argument that the Republican majority ignored proposals by the Legislature's Black Caucus that would have caused fewer districts to run across county lines.

The plaintiffs include Rep. G.A. Hardaway, who was drawn together with another Memphis Democrat in the GOP plan.

The lawsuit names Republican Gov. Bill Haslam and state elections officials as defendants.
