CHATTANOOGA (UTC/WRCB) -- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team rebounded after a 2-3 weekend with a 4-1 victory over visiting SIU Edwardsville at Frost Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Third baseman Sarah Beth Roberts paced the offense with two hits, while designated player Vivian Morimoto and outfielder Cheyenne Willis each connected on solo home runs. Jessica Traxler and Layne Rainey also drove in runs.
Michelle Fuzzard improved to 4-3 in the circle, giving up one run while striking out one in four innings of work. Taylor Deason fanned three batters in three shutout innings of relief to pick up the team's first save of the season.
Alex McDavid's first-inning single gave the Cougars an early 1-0 lead, but UTC quickly fought back.
Morimoto hit the second pitch of her at-bat over the bleachers in right to tie the game, and Rainey beat out an infield single to score Roberts a few batters later to give Chattanooga a lead it would never relinquish.
Willis continued the attack with a lead-off homer to open the third. Traxler's RBI-single scored Stephanie Riech to cap the scoring in the sixth.
The mid-week matchup was the Lady Mocs' final test before opening Southern Conference play against the College of Charleston this weekend. UTC will host the Cougars for a 1 p.m. ET doubleheader on Saturday before capping the three-game set at 2 p.m. ET Sunday.
Saturday's doubleheader will be youth day at Frost Stadium, highlights by a post-game autograph session featuring all of the Lady Mocs.
