Crime Stoppers: Burton Murder Unsolved

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WRCB-TV) - Police tell us they are close to nabbing a suspect in the murder of Aaron Burton, but need your help closing their information gap. There is free cash waiting if you can provide the tip.

"2118 Windsor St. is in East Chattanooga," said Chattanooga Police Officer Nathan Hartwig, "and we have a lot of violent crime in that area." Such was the case in the early morning of April 9th, last year. A neighbor noticed Aaron Burton's door had been left open. Inside, officers found him dead, shot numerous times.

As their investigation went into the daylight hours, family gathered. Just a few houses away, one resident, who did not want to give us her name, summed up the feeling in the neighborhood. "Anybody in there right mind would be scared about the way it's going on around here."

Burton was reportedly a known gang member with several aliases and a lengthy criminal record, including a guilty plea to murder, in which he was sentenced to 16 years. He was released in July of 2009. But, in the neighborhood he was known as the haircut man; a barber for people in the community. And he had family. They need closure and someone should face justice for this most serious of crimes.

Police are not releasing many details except to say they have almost identified a suspect. They just need your help with a little more information to indict the person. "We're really just hoping that there's someone out there that has just been scared for the past year of, fear of retaliation or something that just hasn't called," said Officer Hartwig.

We can help. We don not need your name, just your good information. If detectives can use your tip, you will eligible for up to a thousand dollars reward money. "And that's why we have the Crime Stoppers program," Hartwig said. You can call in, remain completely anonymous and give us that information."

In April, police released pictures of a 'person of interest,' a man who had been with Burton earlier in the day. "He has been identified," Explained Hartwig, "and it was determined he was not involved directly with the homicide."

If you know anything, call Crime Stoppers at: 698-3333. No one, not even the police will ever know it was you who called. You could earn up to a thousand dollars cash, no questions asked.

Good Wednesday.  Today is special because it marks the first day we see our average temperature start to recede.  The average high for yesterday's date was 90.  The average high for today's date is 89. As we progress through today we will notice our humidity levels dropping and skies clearing.  Temperatures will also be about 5 degrees lower than yesterday (93 was the high in Chattanooga Tuesday).  The bottom line: awesome weather is settling in.
