New bill in Georgia tightening reins on pain clinic owners

Posted: Updated:

(WRCB) - A new bill in Georgia is tightening the reins on pain clinic owners.

The measure would require doctors who own pain clinics get a special license from the state.

Anyone operating without a license would be charged with a felony.

The bill stems from numbers showing a rise in suspected clinics dispensing addictive prescription painkillers.

A number that has grown since surrounding states cracked down on the illegal sale of the drugs.

State officials say right now there are about 150 suspicious pain clinics operating in Georgia.
