CHATTANOOGA, TN (Times Free Press) -- Two significant waves of severe weather pummeled east and middle Tennessee on Friday, injuring 33 people and causing damage in 17 counties, according to a report issued this morning by the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency. No fatalities were reported.

The last wave of severe weather that rolled through the Chattanooga region late Friday evening did not appear to cause any major damage, unlike earlier storms that destroyed homes and injured more than 20 in the Harrison and Ooltewah area.

Across the country, at least 31 people were killed by wave after wave of massive thunderstorms and possible tornadoes, according to The Associated Press. Most of the deaths occurred in Indiana and Kentucky.

By 10 p.m. Friday, the weather service had issued 269 tornado warnings across the country. Only 189 warnings were issued in all of February.
