Patient to donate kidney to local dentist

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- A Chattanooga dentist is awaiting a kidney transplant from an unlikely donor, one of his patients.

Dr. Archie Ledford has endured a number of medical problems in the last 12 years.

It started when a virus attacked his heart. He's had heart surgery, prostate cancer and kidney failure.

For the past year and a half he's been undergoing dialysis administered at home, but that is not the solution.

Ledford needs a new kidney.

But because of his medical problems and other treatments, his family members are not viable donors.

Last spring, one of his patients, Kim Elsea, learned about his plight and without his knowledge was tested.

The odds were only about two percent that she would be a match, but Vanderbilt doctors say she was just about a perfect match, hitting five of six markers.

The transplant had been scheduled for next Tuesday, March 6, but a trip to Vanderbilt, this week, led doctors to postpone it.

They want a leg wound to heal before they operate.

Everyone is disappointed. But Kim Elsea encouraged Ledford and his wife Sharon, saying she's in there for the long haul and will be there for them whenever needed.
