Fairchild to step down from School Board in March

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB)-  Longtime Hamilton County School Board member Everett Fairchild announced he is resigning from the Board effective March 15.

Fairchild represents District 3, which includes Hixson, Middle Valley and parts of northern Hamilton County.  He retired from the Chattanooga City School System in 1992 as principal of Hixson Junior High School.  He then served four years on the City School Board until the district merged with Hamilton County.  He was appointed to the County School Board in 1997 when District 3 representative Bill Nevins resigned.  Fairchild was elected to a full four-year term in 1998, and was re-elected in 2002, 2006 and 2010.  He has served as chairman of both the city and county boards at various times during his career.  He stepped down as chairman last September due to health reasons.

Fairchild, 82,  told Eyewitness News, "It's been a good run, but it's time to move on.  I've had some health issues recently, and I just don't feel as good as I'd like to.  It's time for someone else to take it over."

County Commission Chair Larry Henry says the Commission may name a temporary replacement for Fairchild during the next few weeks, but expects the District 3 seat to placed on the August county general election ballot.  "Mr. Fairchild's term runs through 2014, so any election this year would be to fill the remaining two years of his term," Henry said.
