Dalton Police talk safety with citizens

DALTON, WHITFIELD COUNTY (WRCB) -- It was open mic in Dalton Monday night, as neighbors, business owners and the city's police department talked safety.

Dalton Police tell Channel 3,  crimes involving the most serious offenses, like murder and aggravated assault, are increasing for the first time since 2006.

And now, it's vital to warn citizens to keep them from becoming targets.

Police Spokesman Bruce Frazier says these meetings happen at least once a year.

Monday's drew lot of interest, especially from parents seeking warning signs for gang-activity.

Frazier says gangs were very active in the city six years ago, until the gang task force was formed.

But, he says its work to stomp out gangs continues.

"Criminal street-gangs are here," Frazier says. "They are not as big a problem as they are say in a place like Los Angeles or Atlanta, but they are a problem here."

Over the last few years, the department has used Facebook, Twitter, and blogging as ways of opening the lines of communication with the community.

Meetings, like Monday's, are also part of the effort.
