CLEVELAND, BRADLEY COUNTY (WRCB) -- A week ago, Alice Maroon feared she would lose her home. The 86-year-old widow lives off Social Security and had to take out a $7,000 loan to fix her roof.
On February 1, her insurance company dropped her and another provider wouldn't insure her unless her roof was fixed.
Dewayne Stamey, a roofer, took on the challenge and called Channel 3 once he realized the trouble she was in.
"I'm here all alone," Maroon says. "I don't have nobody."
After our story aired Friday, Connie Wright with the Cleveland District United Methodist Church wanted to help.
Through donations, Wright was able to write a check for $3,000 to help cover her roof expenses and delivered it to Maroon Friday.
However, the surprise wasn't over yet.
Maroon's story also touched a Channel 3 viewer who wanted to help, but didn't want the recognition.
He wrote a personal check to Maroon for $4,000 and handed it to Channel 3 to deliver to her.
"Oh my Lord," Maroon says as Channel 3 hands her the check. "Well I just wish my husband was here to enjoy it. I just thank all of you and I appreciate everything everybody has done for me."
"This is money that's donated from churches, from individuals and to be able to go into somebody's home, like Mrs. Alice," Wright says. "And to be able to say, 'here it is, don't worry about this, this is taken care of'. It's just an amazing feeling, it is wonderful."
"Thank you, thank you, thank you," Maroon says. "God bless you!"
