ATLANTA (AP) - A pair of state Senate proposals aimed at getting Congress to pass balanced budget legislation has cleared a committee and may be headed for a full vote.

Senate Resolution 766 urges Congress to pass a balanced budget amendment.

Short of that, Senate Resolution 673 renews a Georgia General Assembly request first passed in 1976 that calls for a convention of the states to address the issue in Washington.

Athens Republican Bill Cowsert says 18 other states have passed similar legislation in recent years and that such a move is necessary because Congress appears unwilling to do so.

If approved, Georgia's renewed request would be in effect until Jan. 1, 2020, or until Congress takes up the issue or two-thirds of the country's state legislatures approve similar legislation.
