Georgia charter school legislation goes before committee

AP Education Writer (AP) - Georgia lawmakers plan to outline how they will pay for charter schools created by the state if a constitutional amendment passes.

The House Education Committee is set to hear debate on House Bill 797 on Tuesday afternoon. The legislation comes as the House readies to take another vote Wednesday on a proposed constitutional amendment that would let the state create charter schools.

A vote taken earlier this month failed to get the required two-thirds majority approval.

The amendment would clarify state education law after a May ruling from the state Supreme Court outlawed the Georgia Charter Schools Commission. The court ruled that the commission was illegally creating charter schools over the objection of school districts.

The measure must also get approval from Senators before it goes to voters in November.
