CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) - Some Hamilton County students got a lesson in history from the people who lived it.
Notre Dame High School joined residents at Mary Walker Towers to celebrate literacy.
They were also continuing the legacy of Mary Walker, who was born a slave and learned to read and write when she was well over a hundred years old.
Organizers say it's important for young people to realize the opportunities they haven't now weren't always available.
Monday's event was organized by a local African American newspaper called the Chattanooga News Chronicle, The Mary Walker Foundation and the City of Chattanooga.
