LAFAYETTE, WALKER COUNTY (WRCB) -- Firefighters had a few challenges fighting a house fire Monday in Walker County.
About 30 firefighters, including inmate firefighters, with Walker County responded shortly after 11:00 a.m. to the home in Blackberry Ridge Estates in Lafayette.
It took them several hours to get the fire under control.
The fire marshal was called to the scene. It looks like the fire started in a back bedroom and spread to the roof.
One of the challenges was getting enough water up to the house to fight the fire.
"Obviously water comes down from the bottom of the hill and the hydrant is even up higher than we are here," Chief Waymond Westbrook says. "To get the water up here, it takes a pretty good bit of pressure. Obviously plenty for the residences, but when we need a lot to fight fire, we were a little bit short on it."
At this point the fire is not considered suspicious.
No one was home at the time. In fact, fire officials are still trying to track down the owner.
The house is a loss, with damages estimated at almost $250,000.
