Mayor cleared to seek federal grant for new tunnel

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- A solution of sorts may finally be on the way for the bottleneck that is the Wilcox Tunnel.

Tuesday night, Mayor Ron Littlefield was given the green light from city council to apply for a $25-million federal grant, promising to match it with $17-million from the City for a new tunnel.

"It's like a $30-million (dollar) project, but as we continue to design and look at options, it's just something we know we need to do," the Mayor says. "Sooner or later we've got to fix that tunnel."

The new tunnel would be taller and wider with a larger walkway and added bike lane.

It would provide two eastbound lanes through Missionary Ridge, large enough for fire trucks and busses.

The current tunnel would remain open for one lane of westbound traffic.
