CHATTANOOGA (UTC) -- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga freshman Taylor Deason was honored as the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
The Lady Mocs went 3-2 at Dot Richardson's National Collegiate Invitational in Clermont, Fla. Deason tossed two complete-game three hit victories for Chattanooga and totaled 11 strikeouts in her first two collegiate starts.
The Clarksville, Tenn., native began the 2012 campaign in Chattanooga's second game of the season against Florida Atlantic. She yielding three runs on three hits in the first inning before settling down and retiring 18 of the next 19 batters in order including a season-best six strikeouts in the 5-3 win.
"After the first inning, I realized and had confidence that we are going to hit the ball and play great defense," said Deason following the game against the Rattlers. "It is so comforting to know that I can just go out there and pitch because the team is behind me, both offensively and defensively."
After Fuzzard received the start against North Carolina, Deason came in relief tossing 1.2 innings and registering two strikeouts as she gained valuable experience facing a team receiving votes in the top 25.
She was named the starter to close the weekend against Florida Atlantic and did not disappoint taking a one hitter into the sixth inning. The only run the freshman gave up was unearned. Deason struck out five during the contest, yielding just two hits in the 7-1 victory.
This is the second-consecutive season that a Lady Moc was recognized in the circle to open the season as senior Michelle Fuzzard (Huntington Beach, Calif.) took the honor to begin the 2011 season.
Chattanooga returns to action on Saturday with a doubleheader against IUPUI and Georgia State beginning at 10 a.m. to start the Panther Invitational. The Lady Mocs battle Eastern Illinois on Sunday at 10 a.m. before bracket play determines the final contest of the day at either 2:30 p.m. or 4:45 p.m.
