Baylor wrestling doubles up rival McCallie, 42-21

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) --There's a pretty good chance Michael Murphy will never forget his first varsity win in the storied Baylor-McCallie rivalry.

The Baylor eighth-grader secured a two-point takedown with three seconds to go in the final period to steal a 4-3 victory from McCallie's James Westbrooks at 106 pounds on Friday night.

While the win came right in the middle of the annual dual match between the Division II powers, it proved to be one of the biggest swings in momentum in the Red Raiders' 42-21 win in the 85th meeting between the two arch rivals.

The Blue Tornado (7-9) would have pulled even on the scoreboard with a Murphy loss, and while they managed to win the next two bouts, McCallie was never able to grab a lead.

After Alex Elsea (113 pounds) and Adam Connell (120) followed with W's for the Blue Tornado, the Red Raiders won five of the final six bouts (three by pin) to pull away.

Baylor's Matt Bodine (195), Zach Watson (126), Brandon Bruner (132) and Houston Clements all won their classes by pin. Alex Ward (138) earned McCallie's only fall.

The night's marathon match went to the Blue Tornado's Casey Cook, who scored on an escape in the third sudden death overtime period to beat Ryan Seaberg, 3-2, at 220 pounds.

Baylor (22-9) has now won eight straight in the historic rivalry.
