GPS senior Kara Maynord wins state bowling title

SMYRNA, Tenn. (WRCB) -- The Chattanooga area crowned its first state champion of the high school winter season Friday morning when GPS senior Kara Maynord won the individual state title at the TSSAA Division II Girls Bowling Tournament.

Maynord's championship pinfall was 1,851, which was 27 better than runner-up Miranda Mott of Ensworth.

Maynord's day wasn't done after claiming the individual crown.

She returned to the lanes in the afternoon to help the Bruisers rout Pope John Paul II 25-2 in their opening match in the Division II team bracket. GPS, who remains unbeaten at 21-0, will face St. Agnes (11-2) in Saturday morning's semifinals.

Soddy-Daisy (13-2) also advanced on the girls' side of the Class AAA bracket with an 18-9 win over Wilson Central in the quarterfinals. The Lady Trojans will face undefeated Collierville (19-0) in Saturday's semifinals.

Soddy-Daisy and McCallie also advanced in the boys' team tournament.

The Trojans (20-0) topped Dobyns Bennett 18-9 in the AAA quarterfinals to set up a battle of unbeatens with Hardin County (21-0) in the semifinals. McCallie outlasted Lausanne 15-12 in the Division II boys quarterfinals. The Blue Tornado (15-1) will roll against DCA (24-3) in the semifinals.

Championship matches will be held Saturday morning following the conclusion of the semifinals.
