Vols host yet another ranked foe in No. 13 UConn
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee has learned a thing or two lately about the best teams in the nation.
Coach Cuonzo Martin says the most important thing is that they can all beat their opponents in so many different ways.
The Vols (8-10) are preparing for a little bit of everything when the nation's 13th-ranked team and defending national champion Connecticut (14-4) visits on Saturday. The Huskies will be their fourth Top 25 opponent in two weeks and seventh of the season.
Tennessee has won just one of those games, a 67-56 victory against then-No. 13 Florida thanks to their strongest defensive performance of the season. That improvement on defense kept the Vols competitive against No. 18 Mississippi State, No. 2 Kentucky and Georgia since then, but it hasn't translated into wins.
UConn sporting Pat Summitt T-Shirts
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut basketball fans can buy T-shirts showing their support for Tennessee women's coach Pat Summitt as she faces early onset dementia.
The shirts, which include the Husky logo and read in part "I bleed Blue and White, but a wear purple to Back Pat," also will be worn by the men's basketball players as they warm up before their game at Tennessee on Saturday.
Purple is the signature color of Alzheimer's charities.
Tennessee fans are also being encouraged to wear "We Back Pat" T-shirts to the game as part of "We Back Pat" week at the school.
A portion of the proceeds from the shirts will be donated to programs supporting people with dementia and Alzheimer's in Tennessee.
The special UConn T-shirts are available at the school's website, www.uconnhuskies.com.
