LIVELINES: PET CALLS

Before you pet a strange dog, or let your child young pet them there are some simple precautions you should take to make sure you aren't among the nearly 5 million people who suffer from animal bites each year.

Dr. Randy Hammon from the Northgate Animal Hospital was our guest this morning. Dr. Hammon discussed the following issues..

WHY PETS BITE

-4.7 million people suffer bites from animals each year

-half are under 12

-when animals are frightened they try to protect themselves

 

WHAT SIGNS TO WATCH FOR

-tail wagging and relaxed ears are friendly feeling

-danger signs are dogs ears up and tail tucked, & barking

-cats hissing, tail down, growling

HOW TO AVOID ANIMAL BITES

-leave pets alone when resting, eating, or playing with toy

-when petting a dog, approach from the side

-fetch is a good game for dogs, avoid tug of war

-with unfamiliar dogs, do not reach down to pet
