UPDATED: Storms leave hundreds without power

CHATTANOOGA -

(WRCB) - Heavy rains and high winds overnight have left hundreds without power in North Georgia.

North Georgia Electric Membership Corporation says 150 customers are still without power Friday.

The Highway 53 area east of I-75 toward Fairmount suffered extensive damage caused by high winds. At the height of the storm, more than 3,000 NGEMC customers in the Gordon County were without power.

Many roads were impassable as power crews worked through the night. Damage to NGEMC's system included 17 broken poles and numerous fallen power lines throughout the area.

NGEMC crews and contract crews are still working in the area and will remain on duty until all power has been restored.

Further south, Georgia Power says 3,000 customers remain without power in Rome, Georgia.

Both utilities say they will have crews working all day to restore power as quickly as possible.

If you encounter a downed power line, stay away from it and call your local utility.
