JASPER, Tenn. (WRCB) -- In need of new leader to rebuild it's fading football program, Marion County is turning to someone who's done it before.
The Warriors hired Signal Mountain defensive coordinator Mac McCurry as their new head coach. McCurry replaces Troy Boeck, who was fired last month after a program-worst 1-9 season.
McCurry has previous head coaching experience at Moore County and Marshall County in Tennessee, and Ripley High in Mississippi. The veteran coach, whose overall record is 220-66, posted a winning mark at each stop after taking over a program with a losing record.
"There were several factors that made us believe Coach McCurry is the right choice," Marion assistant principal and athletic director Larry Ziegler told our media partners at the Times Free Press. "We need somebody to come in and rebuild our program, and he has a history of having success doing that at three other programs.
"He's a man of integrity and gave us his word he will be here for more than a year or two, so we know this is not just a stepping-stone job for him. This is my alma mater and I wanted the right man to lead our program and our boys, and we believe Coach McCurry is that guy."
McCurry becomes the sixth Marion County coach since the Warriors won four straight state titles under Ken Colquette in the 90's. Boeck took over the program in 2008 and led the Warriors to the state semifinals and quarterfinals in his first two years before struggling through back-to-back losing seasons.
