VW receives top LEED certification
CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- Chattanooga's Volkswagen plant is raising the bar for the automotive industry in the world.
The facility at Enterprise South became the first leadership in energy and environmental design--or LEEDd-- platinum certification, on Thursday.
It represents the highest level of environmental performance recognized by the US Green Building Council.
"It starts with the area here-- the architecture of the building, water management and many small details we worked on with which we decreased energy consumption, decreased emissions and water consumption and also decreased residual materials," says Frank Fischer, CEO and chairman of Volkswagen of Chattanooga.
The paint shop alone will save 50 million gallons of water over the next decade.
The plant is about 40 percent more energy efficient than a typical manufacturing facility in America.
