Fleischmann named as defendant in lawsuit
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - Republican US Representative Chuck Fleischmann has been pulled into a lawsuit involving his top aide.
Fleischmann has been named as a defendant in a defamation lawsuit filed against his chief of staff, Chip Saltsman, according to the Chattanooga Times Free Press (http://bit.ly/rUOaNG).
Saltsman was sued by Mark Winslow, an official in the Republican primary campaign of Robin Smith, who ran against Fleischmann. The suit says Saltsman wrongly publicized Winslow's confidential severance compensation agreement with the state GOP and made false claims during the campaign.
Winslow's attorney, Gary Blackburn, said he added Fleischmann as a defendant because "if Saltsman's liable, so is Fleischmann."
Saltsman has not commented on the allegations. Jordan Powell, a spokesman for Fleischmann, said the congressman "was advised by counsel not to comment on any pending litigation."
