GA Man crawls under smoke to rescue blind man

Posted: Updated:

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say a man crawled underneath smoke to rescue a blind 76-year-old man from his burning home in Gainesville after spotting the blaze from a nearby business.

Gainesville Fire Chief Jon Canada tells The Times of Gainesville ( that the man and the rescuer were both treated for smoke inhalation after the Monday morning fire.

Canada said firefighters found fire and smoke in the 1,000-square-foot house when they arrived to battle the blaze, which happened around 3:30 a.m. Authorities say the man was rescued shortly before firefighters arrived.

Canada said the rescuer made a split-second decision that resulted in saving the man's life. Neither man's name was immediately available.
