Stormy evening ahead

Posted: Updated:

(WRCB) - We are expecting a line of heavy rain and thunderstorms late this afternoon into this evening.

First and foremost, this is NOT a system like the one in April.  In April, we were under a HIGH risk of severe weather.  Today, it is a SLIGHT risk.

With that said, there are still hazards we need to be aware of.  Here they are:

Rain:  We are expecting 1-2" of rain within a couple of hours.  Flooding will not be a widespread threat, but some minor street flooding is possible.

Wind:  Strong wind gusts in excess of 30 mph are possible.  I would plan for the possibility of power outages.  Downed tree limbs are also possible as are the toppling of some shallow rooted trees.

Hail:  We will probably have some isolated areas getting small, pea-sized hail.  The risk of large, damaging hail, however, is very small.

Tornadoes:  We cannot rule out the slight chance of one or two tornadoes, but there is a VERY SMALL risk.  The Storm Prediction Center puts our chance of seeing tornadoes with this system at only 2%- 5%.  With that said, be diligent in being alert and paying attention to all watches and warnings this afternoon.

This is a GREAT opportunity to download the WRCB weather app to your smartphone.  It has interactive radar, and severe weather alerts as well as storm tracking.  It is a helpful tool, especially if the power goes out.
