New law enforcement device shows crime scene in 3D

CHATTANOOGA (AP) - Sometime next year, Chattanooga investigators hope to be able to take jurors past the yellow crime scene tape to the scene of a fatal shooting.

The Chattanooga Police Department is the first in Tennessee to get a Leica Geosystems ScanStation C10 that can reproduce a crime scene on a screen in three dimensions.

The jurors could see the body still on the floor. They could measure the distance between bloodstains, trace a bullet trajectory or see which way a shooter fled.

The scan station cost $210,000 in grant money.

District Attorney Bill Cox told the Chattanooga Times Free Press "it takes the jury right to the crime scene."
