Ringgold church gets new steeple

RINGGOLD, CATOOSA COUNTY, GA (WRCB) -- A new milestone in the recovery efforts, as a Ringgold church's most distinguishing feature is restored.

Ironically, the steeple arrived on October 27th, exactly six months after the powerful tornado that took it down.

Crews spent all day, Tuesday, installing it as the city stopped to watch.

It has been a remarkable turnaround for this city and the steeple build is a testament to that.

Ringgold First Baptist is putting the final touches on it's home after an EF4 tornado reduced much of the area to rubble six months ago.

"We were concerned about all of Ringgold because we didn't know where or how it would affect us," says Ringgold resident, Carolyn Sneed.

"I couldn't believe it when we got down here and saw all of the destruction and damage the tornado did," says church member, Jimmy Jay.

Construction crews very carefully placed the pieces of the steeple atop the church with one goal in mind: make sure the structure is secure.

"We don't want this thing going south again like the last one did, ha ha," says Keith Sutton with Sutton Christian Supply.

Church goers watched from the parking lot.

For church member Marsha Armour, it was an emotional moment of healing.

"Yes. It has been hard. For the entire town, it has been hard, but we re coming back," says Armour.

The new steeple is made of better material, fiberglass. It is supposed to keep maintenance costs low and last longer.

The church will now continue in the same fashion as much of the area, and that is rebuild, one piece at a time.
