UPDATE: Man killed by train

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - Chattanooga Police are investigating a fatal train accident off Shallowford Road.

It happened at 3900 Cromwell Road at 5:15 pm.

Chattanooga Police got the call from a woman, who asked officers to come check on the well being of the man sitting on there on the tracks.

Before officers made it to the scene, another call was received saying the man had been hit by the train.

Sergeant Jerri Weary tells Channel 3 the victim is a white male, but no other details about victim are known.

Police say the train had slowed to 35 miles per hour since it was approaching the Shallowford Road intersection, but it was still not enough time to stop.

They say it's a tough and unusual scene to respond to.

"To have a suicide by train is not something that we typically see. Have seen once earlier this year but definitely is not the manner in which we typically see," says Weary.

Police are Working with CSX to recover his body.

Police say their investigation points to this being a case of suicide.

A CSX official on the scene did not want to comment.

Police are working to identify the man so they can notify his family.
