TSSAA reveals 2011 playoff brackets

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) – The road to a 2011 Tennessee state championship has been revealed for 19 Chattanooga area football teams.

The TSSAA released its official playoff brackets for all eight classes Saturday morning, with first-round play set to kick off next Friday night.

Last year's state runner-up Baylor (9-1) earned the top overall seed in Division II-AA with a 38-14 win over BGA Friday night, receiving the first-round bye and home field advantage that comes with it. BGA will host No. 6 McCallie (4-5) in round one.

McMinn County's 48-36 win over rival Bradley Central boosted the Cherokees up to a No. 2 seed and dropped the Bears down to No. 6, but the two teams could see each other again soon.

McMinn County, who will have to play without quarterback Nathan Simbeck following a Week 10 ejection, will host No. 7 Oak Ridge (7-3) in the opening round. Bradley Central (7-3) will travel to No. 3 Cookeville (6-4). If both teams win, the Cherokees will host the Bears in round two.

Cleveland (5-5) was a surprise omission in the Class 5A bracket, leaving Ooltewah (7-3) as the only local team in the 32-team field. The No. 4 Owls will host No. 5 Shelbyville (7-3).

Class 4A has an all-Chattanooga opening round game with top-seeded East Hamilton (6-4) playing host to No. 8 Brainerd. The Panthers (5-5) got the final playoff spot after beating fellow bubble-dweller East Ridge 20-14 Friday night. The Hurricanes claimed their first-ever playoff trip by winning their first-ever District 6-AA championship with a 42-6 win over Howard.

Back-to-back losses to end the year dropped Red Bank (7-3) to a No. 6 seed and a first-round road trip to No. 3 Sequoyah (5-5). Despite a winless district record, Notre Dame (5-5) earned a No. 7 seed and will travel to No. 2 Marshall County (7-3).

Notre Dame would travel to Red Bank in round two if both teams win their openers.

Six area teams qualified for the Class 3A postseason, led by top-seed Bledsoe County. The Warriors (9-1) will host No. 8 Meigs County in round one, with the winner advancing to face the winner of a first-round matchup between No. 5 Tyner (5-5) and No. 4 Alcoa (6-4).

Polk County (7-3) received a No. 3 seed and will host Kingston (7-3), while No. 4 Sequatchie County gets a home playoff game against No. 5 Harpeth (7-3) and No. 7 Grundy County (6-4) travels to No. 2 Goodpasture (7-3).

Boyd-Buchanan is the only area team in the Class 2A bracket. The Bucs (9-1) locked up a No. 2 seed with a shutout win at Copper Basin on Friday night. They'll have a bye through the first round before hosting the Rockwood-Watertown winner in round two.

A 3-0 overtime loss at Knoxville Grace Christian in Friday's season finale cost South Pittsburg a first-round bye and home field advantage throughout the Class 1A playoffs. The Pirates (8-2) received a No. 3 seed and will host local foe Grace Academy (6-4) in round one. The winner will have to travel to No. 2 Greenback (9-1) in the second round.

Lookout Valley (7-3) is also in the Class 1A bracket, earning a No. 5 seed for a road trip to No. 4 Sunbright (7-3).

First-round participants must win four games to earn a trip to Cookeville, where state champions will be crowned at Tennessee Tech's Tucker Stadium Dec. 1-3.
