Gordon Lee, Ringgold still alive at GHSA state softball

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRCB) -- Gordon Lee and Ringgold are the only two Northwest Georgia teams left standing after day two of the GHSA State Softball Championships in Columbus.

And the Lady Trojans are on far more solid footing.

The defending Class A champs clinched a spot in the championship round with a 9-0 rout of Wesleyan in Friday's winner's bracket final. Gordon Lee (36-1) will face the winner of an elimination game between Wesleyan and George Walton Academy at 11 a.m. ET Saturday for the state title.

If Gordon Lee loses the 11 a.m. ET contest, the two teams will play again at 1 p.m. ET.

Ringgold is still alive, but the Lady Tigers will have to win three games to claim the Class AAA state championship. Ringgold suffered its first loss of the tournament in an 8-1 setback to Oconee County in the winner's bracket final on Friday.

The Lady Tigers (26-13) must beat West Laurens in an elimination game at 9 a.m. ET Saturday to earn a rematch with Oconee County, whom Ringgold will then have to beat twice to win the title.

West Laurens earned the date with Ringgold by eliminated Heritage. The Generals opened the day with a 12-5 loser's bracket victory over Cross Creek, but didn't get any further. West Laurens ended the Generals' season with a 5-1 win, avenging a 4-0 loss to Heritage in Thursday's tournament opener.

Fannin County, LFO and Northwest Whitfield also saw their championship hopes come to an end Friday.

Fannin County was the first school ousted after starting Friday in the Class AA loser's bracket. The Rebels managed to win their first elimination contest 3-0 over Bleckley County, but then gave up four unearned runs in a tough 4-3 season-ending loss to Blessed Trinity.

Blessed Trinity then made it two-for-two in elimination games against area teams by ousting LFO. The Lady Warriors stayed alive early Friday with a 9-0 rout of Southeast Bulloch, but then lost to Blessed Trinity 6-3 to finish the year 26-12.

In Class AAAA, Northwest Whitfield won two elimination games but couldn't claim a third victory to survive the day. The Lady Bruins beat Loganville 4-3, topped Union Grove 3-1, but were ultimately sent home with a 7-5 loss to Whitewater in their final game of a loser's bracket triple-header.

Heritage is still battling in the Class AAA loser's bracket after beating Cross Creek, 12-5. The Generals will now get a rematch with West Laurens later Friday night. Heritage beat West Laurens 4-0 Thursday in the opening game for both teams.
