CHATTANOOGA (UTC) -- Southern Conference media members agreed with the league coaches Thursday in selecting Chattanooga and Davidson as the teams to beat in the North and South Divisions, respectively.
The media and coaches agreed exactly on the order for the North. UTC picked up 24 of a possible 30 votes with 172 to out-distance Appalachian State (136) in second. Western Carolina (123), UNCG (90), Elon (76) and Samford (36) follow suit with ASU (3), WCU (2) and the Spartans (1) receiving the other six first-place tallies.
Davidson received 18 of the 30 South Division first-place vote in a closer race. The Wildcats' 165 points is nine ahead of College of Charleston (156) which got 10 ballots with first place notations. Wofford was third (105) with Furman (80), Georgia Southern (76) and The Citadel (48) right behind. The Terriers and Eagles each got one first-place mention as well.
"I said it yesterday, it's just October," said Chattanooga head coach John Shulman, who is entering his eighth year on the bench. "Last year we were picked third and tied for the division championship so October is October.
"What it means is that we have a pretty good basketball team," he added. "We need to keep working hard and getting better every day."
Chattanooga opens basketball festivities with the Memorial Blue & Gold Tipoff presented by Prater's this weekend during pre-game tailgating as the Mocs football team hosts Furman. Both the men and women will be on display following the Moc Walk at approximately 11:45 a.m.

Chattanooga returns four starters - Keegan Bell, Chris Early, Ricky Taylor and Omar Wattad - from the 2010-11 Southern Conference North Division co-Champions. They are looking for a SoCon-record 11th NCAA Tournament appearance. UTC is the only team in the league to win three division titles in the last four seasons.
