Baylor returns to No. 1 spot in season's final week

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- Baylor already has a No. 1 ranking in front of its name, but it hopes to have that number applied to its playoff seed by week's end.

The Red Raiders (8-1) are the new top-ranked team in Division II in the latest Tennessee Associated Press Prep Poll release Monday, but they need to beat fourth-ranked BGA this Friday night to lock up the top seed in the Division II-AA playoffs.

This is the second time in 2011 that Baylor has earned the state's top ranking. The Red Raiders held the No. 1 spot for a few weeks earlier this season after beating Ensworth, but dropped after their lone loss to Brentwood Academy.

Ensworth beat Brentwood Academy last week to push Baylor back into the top spot.

South Pittsburg (8-1) and Boyd-Buchanan (8-1) are No. 2 in their respective polls. The Pirates remained second in Class 1A after routing Polk County, while the Bucs moved up one spot from No. 3 despite having a bye week.

Bledsoe County made its debut in the Class 3A poll at the expense of Polk County. The Wildcats dropped from the top ten after the loss at South Pitt, allowing the Warriors to jump into the No. 10 spot this week.

Red Bank sank four spots to No. 8 in Class 4A after a loss at East Hamilton. The Lions (7-2) are one spot ahead of Signal Mountain (1-2). The Eagles are now unable to make the playoffs after vacating six wins for use of an ineligible player.

Bradley Central is still No. 8 in Class 6A after beating rival Cleveland 18-0 on a national ESPNU broadcast last week. The Bears (7-2) will host McMinn County this Friday night for the District 5-AAA title.
