TUNNEL HILL, Ga. (WRCB) -- Northwest Whitfield and Ringgold made it a total of five North Georgia softball programs that will make the trip to Columbus next week to compete for a state championship in the GHSA State Softball Elite Eight.
Northwest Whitfield beat Pope 3-1 in a deciding game three of their Class AAA second round series in Tunnel Hill Friday afternoon, while Ringgold knocked off Carrollton 6-2 on the road in a Class AAA rubber match.
The Lady Bruins (27-7) scored two runs in the first to give ace Emily Boyd an early cushion. Boyd settled down after early control problems to cruise to a complete game one-hitter. Mykeah Johnson, Ashley Connor and Bayli Cruse each drove in a run.
The Lady Tigers got a complete game three-hit effort from Kensey Sholl in the circle and scored two runs in each the third, fourth and fifth innings to pull away. Erica Bynum had three hits, including a homer and a double, and drove in two runs while also scoring twice.
Northwest Whitfield and Ringgold will join Heritage, LFO and Gordon Lee in Columbus next week for the GHSA Elite Eight.
