Lafayette fire destroys apartment building

LAFAYETTE, WALKER COUNTY (WRCB) – Firefighters in Lafayette spent the afternoon battling a massive apartment fire.

According to officials, a candle fell onto the bed, causing the blaze at the corner of Villanow Street and Chattanooga Street.

Only one of apartments in the two-story building was occupied. That resident was able to make it out safely.

Firefighters say they had to call in extra crews from the surrounding area to attack the flames, including an aerial truck to suppress the fire from the roof.

The second floor of the building is considered at total loss. Two empty storefronts next door to the apartment suffered smoke and water damage.

Fire crews say firewalls kept the blaze from spreading.

Firefighters will remain on scene for most of the afternoon, putting out hotspots as they are found.
