MADISONVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The American Civil Liberties Union has stepped into a dispute between a Madisonville family and a school system over whether a high school principal assaulted a teenager.

Sequoyah High School senior Chris Sigler alleged that Principal Maurice Moser assaulted him after he wore a homemade shirt to school on Sept. 27 and Sept. 30 that said "Gay Straight Alliance: We've got your back" on it. Sigler told The Knoxville News Sentinel the alleged assault occurred on Sept. 30 (

Monroe County Schools attorney Chuck Cagle said there are "vast, vast differences" between the family's allegations and what school officials say happened.

ACLU of Tennessee legal director Tricia Herzfeld said the ACLU has been monitoring events at the school since August, when students unsuccessfully sought to form a gay-straight alliance.
