Inmates on work detail caught drinking on the job

LAFAYETTE, WALKER COUNTY, GA (WRCB) - A pair of Walker County inmates will be disciplined after jailers discovered they had been drinking beer while on work detail.

Captain Mike Freeman says the two inmates returned from work detail on Monday and smelled of alcohol. Jailers searched them and conducted sobriety tests. The two were not legally drunk, but admitted to drinking while working in the community.

Freeman says the two inmates were working in a county government building and were being supervised by a building maintenance worker. He says because the inmates are trustees, they are not monitored by a Sheriff's Office employee.

Freeman believes someone left the beer for the inmates. He says the county worker will not be charged or disciplined in the incident.

The two inmates have lost trustee status and visitation privileges. Additional disciplinary action could be taken at a later date.

The Sheriff's Office is not releasing the names of the inmates involved.
