FIRST ON 3: No leads in search of Palmgren lake homes

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) – Hamilton County authorities traveled to Wetumpka, Alabama, in connection with the search for a missing Signal Mountain mother.

Sheriff's Office investigators searched the Alabama lake homes of Matthew and Gail Palmgren Tuesday night.

In May, Wetumpka Police searched the area around the Palmgrens' home on Lake Jordan, just north of Montgomery, but found no evidence of foul play.

Gail Palmgren was last seen April 30 by a neighbor. There has been no contact with her since.

The lake homes are the final Palmgren properties to be searched. Investigators already searched the Palmgren's Signal Mountain home, their storage unit in Chattanooga and the home of Matthew Palmgren's mother.

Since no criminal charges have been filed in the disappearance of Gail Palmgren, attorneys for Matthew Palmgren have agreed search the family's property, provided an attorney is present at the time of the search.

"If there was credible evidence to show us that we would focus on criminal activity here, perhaps we would have moved a quicker on some of these things," said Hamilton County Sheriff Jim Hammond.

In an interview Wednesday, Hammond told Channel 3 this is still a missing persons case.

"I've seen cases strange enough where you would just swear somebody was dead to foul play and they do turn up, even years later," said Hammond, "so you can't discount that."

Wetumpka is also the home of Gail's close friend, Alrene Durham, who told Channel 3 in June she had video evidence of Matthew Palmgren threatening Gail, just days before her disappearance.

Hammond says it's possible investigators will conduct an aerial search of Signal Mountain once the weather changes and the leaves fall, giving the area more visibility.

"Probably the best thing that can help us is if anyone happens to remember that unique Jeep with the insignia on the back, and can remember something that would assist us bring closure to this case," said Hammond.
