UPDATE: Two sought in laundromat robbery

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) – Police are looking for two men they say robbed two people in a laundromat.

According to police, the two men entered the Coin Laundry on East 23rd Street around 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

The first suspect sprayed mace in the face of 42-year-old Paco Ramirez and began going through his pockets. The second suspect pulled a gun on 35-year-old Maria Ramirez, no relation to Paco, and demanded her purse. She had her son with her.

They were able to get both victims' wallet and purse before fleeing the scene.

"To just to walk into a laundry mat in daylight and hold people at gun point, is a brazen act. Regardless," said Sgt. Jerri Weary.

Weary says the suspects weren't concerned with hiding their identity. For surveillance reasons, that is a good thing. Both suspects fled the store and have not been seen since.

Sgt. Weary can only speculate why the suspects would take it this far for little return.

"To go to that extreme for pocket change, or $70 and a cell phone, it defies understanding," said Weary.

Regulars at the laundry mat tell Channel 3 they've never felt unsafe there, but now they'll think twice.

"I come here about twice a week, I don't think nothing of it, but I guess it can happen anywhere. I'm sure them people didn't think that was going to happen," said customer Joe Sears, "it makes me think now to keep a look out, always watch out."

The first suspect is described as a black male, about 5'08, with a heavy build, wearing a dark ball cap with a red and white bill (possibly an Atlanta hat), a dark pull over shirt and dark pants. The second suspect is described as a black male about 5'08 with a heavy build, wearing a dark hat, dark shirt, and dark pants. Suspect two is slightly shorter than suspect one. Both suspects are clean shaven and have short hair.

If anyone recognizes the men in the photos, they're asked to contact Chattanooga Police at 423-698-2525.
