ATHENS, Ga. (WRCB) -- Rumors of Mark Richt's demise are greatly premature, at least in the eyes of former Georgia coach and athletic director Vince Dooley.
The man responsible for hiring Richt voiced his support for the embattled Bulldogs' coach in an interview Thursday with the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
Richt is just 15-15 in his last 30 games, and is off to an 0-2 start in 2011, but Dooley said he believes the veteran coach will weather the storm.
"Coach Richt is a proven coach. He's the type of guy you want at Georgia, the way he conducts himself, his character and the way he represents the university," Dooley said. "I think he has the support of the greatest majority of people because they believe in him. I believe in him, too, and I think he'll come out of it.
"He'll be fine. He'll be here a long time."
School president Michael Adams also backed Richt when asked his opinion on the coach's job status. He also urged others to do the same.
"The issue for me right now is I think this is the time for all of us to come together and get behind this group of guys who played a heck of a game last Saturday and deserve our support," Adams told the AJC at the UGA Cabinet's fall semester meeting. "I've never folded on anything 15 or 20 percent into it, and that's what we would be doing.
Georgia will host FCS-foe Coastal Carolina (2-0) this Saturday at Sanford Stadium at 1 p.m. ET.
