French company to help complete Bellefonte plant

HOLLYWOOD, AL. (AP) - French-based Areva, 1 of the world's largest nuclear power companies, says it will work with the Tennessee Valley Authority on the utility's $4.9 billion project to finish work at its Bellefonte site in Jackson County.

The Huntsville Times reports Luc Oursel, the company's CEO, visited the plant on Thursday.

The company owns the design of the Babcock and Wilcox pressurized water reactor that TVA plans to place into operation by 2020. Company officials say the Bellefonte reactor is a larger model of a Babcock and Wilcox design that is operated at a number of plants in the U.S.

Work on the plant began in 1974 but was halted in the late 1980s. The plant is about 55% complete.

The TVA decided to resume work last month.
