FIRST ON 3: Copper Basin football player faces child molestation charges

Posted: Updated:

COPPER BASIN, POLK COUNTY, TN. (WRCB) – A Copper Basin High School football player has been arrested on charges of child molestation.

According to the Fannin County, Georgia, Sheriff's Office, 17-year-old Chris Phelan has been arrested on child molestation charges.

The Sheriff's Office says the allegation involve a 12-year-old girl. Georgia does have the "rape of a child" law that Tennessee has. Due to the difference in age, Phelan has been charged with child molestation, which carries a more severe punishment than statutory rape.

Superintendent Dr. James Jones confirms an investigation is underway after a football player was criminally charged.

Dr. Jones says he has not been contacted by police, and won't say when the alleged incident happened.

Phelan will not be allowed to play while the investigation is pending.

In Georgia, Phelan is considered to be an adult at 17, and has been charged as such.

Channel 3 Eyewitness News has been covering this story throughout the day. We'll have reaction from parents at the school, tonight at 6:00 p.m.
