Harris English turns pro, joins Nationwide Tour

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB) -- Harris English already owns one career Nationwide Tour victory.

But the next time he wins he'll actually be able to keep the check.

The former Baylor School golfer announced his intentions to turn pro as a member of the Nationwide Tour Tuesday at Black Creek Club, his former home course with the Red Raiders.

"It's very surreal," English said. "These last few months have flown by and I've played well. I'm just glad this day is here and I can move forward.

"Playing for money will be different. I've never done it before, so it will be a change of mindset. But it will also be fun. It's something I've always been looking forward to."

He'll make his pro debut next week in California, and will play a tournament in Texas as well before returning to Black Creek for the Children's Hospital Classic (formerly the Chattanooga Classic) in early October.

The four-time University of Georgia all-American is fully confident he's ready to compete on the pro level after winning the Children's Hospital Invitational in Columbus, Ohio, earlier this year. English turned down the $144,000 winner's check to keep his amateur status for the U.S. Amateur and the prestigious Walker Cup, which completed play last week.

"I don't know how it will be different, but I'm sure it will be," English said about competing with his new title. "I'm going to try to keep the same attitude I had as an amateur in these events, but I'm sure it will be surreal the first few weeks as I adjust.

"Hopefully I can quickly get to where I'm comfortable out there. That's the main goal."

He hopes he finds that comfort level before October 6 when he'll join fellow Baylor School graduate Luke List as one of the local favorites in the Children's Hospital Classic at Black Creek.

"There's definitely expectations because I know the course so well, but tournament golf will be so different than playing out here every day in high school," English said of playing at Black Creek. "There will be different pins, different shots. I'm just looking forward to having a fun week with family and friends who come out, and hopefully I'll play well."
