Chattanooga man charged with rape after leaving cell phone

CHATTANOOGA (WRCB)  - Derrick Jones, 22, of Hixson, is charged with aggravated rape in an investigation from August of 2010.

According to reports, a woman alleges she was raped multiple times by a masked man and had to be hospitalized. When she returned home the next day, she noticed an unfamiliar cell phone laying next to her bed. It turned out to be Jones' personal cell phone, which he had left behind after the alleged attack.

Investigators were able to contact a family member at a Hixson apartment complex who confirmed Jones was her son. One year later, detectives say DNA connected Jones to the crime.

This is not Jones' first run-in with the law. In 2008, he faced charges for taking a loaded gun to Hixson High School. Those charges were eventually dismissed.

Even though the rape incident did not happen at Jones' apartment complex, his neighbors worry.

"I hate to move, but I'm going to," said Jim Barnette pointing to a sign posted on his window that states: "Do not come here or you will get shot."

Knowing a rape suspect also lived there until recently only makes him want to get out faster.
