DALTON, WHITFIELD COUNTY (WRCB) - The commission established to unify city and county governments have scheduled a public meeting for Wednesday.

The Dalton-Whitfield County Charter and Consolidation Commission will hold a public meeting Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the Whitfield County Administration Building #2.

Building #2 is located at 214 W. King Street in Dalton.

The commission has been charged with writing a charter for a proposed metro government. The commission will also have to find ways to consolidate all of the city and county services, including law enforcement, fire, public works and the council and commission.

Dalton-Whitfield would not be the first merged government in the state, Columbus-Muscogee, Cusseta-Chattahoochee, Georgetown-Quitman, Statenville-Echols, Athens-Clarke, and Augusta-Richmond all have some form of merged city-county government.

The metro government and the new charter would have to be approved by voters. The commission hopes to put the issue on the November 2012 ballot.
