Lookouts lose playoff opener, 9-6

Posted: Updated:

KODAK, Tenn. (WRCB) -- Chattanooga's early four-run lead was no match for Tennessee's seven-run fourth inning Thursday night as the Smokies rallied to beat the Lookouts 9-6 in the opener of the Southern League Divisional Series at Smokies Park.

The Lookouts, who are playing in their first postseason since 2006, now trail the best-of-five series 1-0 with game two scheduled for Friday night in Kodak.

Travis Denker, Scott Van Slyke and Hector Gimenez each homered as Chattanooga erupted for five runs in the first three innings to claim a 5-1 advantage.

It didn't last.

Josh Vitters and Blake Lalli both delivered two-run home runs in a seven-run frame that put the game away.

Gimenez finished with three hits for the Lookouts and Corey Smith added two more, including a double.

Stephen Fife took the loss, giving up seven earned runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings. He struck out four and walked one, and gave up one of the fourth-inning homers.
