NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - August goes into weather statistics as the driest month ever in Chattanooga.

The National Weather Service said the city got only 0.01 inch of rain last month.

Forecaster Sam Roberts said the scant moisture that reached Tennessee rained itself out on the way southeastward, dropping less rain than usual on the Tri-cities, even less at Knoxville and next to none on Chattanooga.

In Memphis, the summer issue was heat. With a 106-degree day on Aug. 3 to punctuate it, the season was the third-hottest in the city. The second-hottest was last year.

In Nashville, hotter and dryer than normal weather notched a 25th-hottest spot.

There's a weekend rain chance, then cooler than usual weather for Labor Day.
