Lookouts celebrate playoff berth with blowout win

Posted: Updated:

MOBILE, Ala. (WRCB) -- Chattanooga wrapped up a postseason berth without even lifting a finger Tuesday afternoon.

Then the North Division leaders did plenty of heavy lifting Tuesday night.

Hours after Jackson's 6-3 loss to Huntsville cemented the Lookouts' spot in the Southern League playoffs, Griff Erickson had four hits and four RBI to lead a 19-hit parade in a 14-2 blowout of Mobile.

Eight different Lookouts collected multiple hits, with Brian Cavazos-Galvez and Hector Gimenez also driving in three runs apiece. Gimenez and Scott Van Slyke each homered.

Allen Webster's pitching was as good as the offense. The right-hander gave up just one earned run on two hits in six innings to improve to 6-3 on the year.

Despite losing four of six to the South Division's second-half champs, the Lookouts still managed to lock up their first postseason appearance since 2006 with the help of two straight Jackson losses.

Chattanooga was eliminated in the first round by Huntsville in its last playoff series, and has not won a Southern League championship since 1988.

The Lookouts (38-27) will face first-half champ Tennessee in the divisional series, but a schedule won't be finalized until the end of the regular season. The two teams remained tied atop the North Division standings with five games left to play.

If Chattanooga wins the North's second-half title, the Lookouts will host the Smokies for games three, four (if necessary) and five (if necessary) on September 10, 11 and 12.

If Tennessee wins the second-half title, the Lookouts will only get to host game three on September 10. Tickets for that contest went on sale Tuesday morning at AT&T Field and at www.ChattanoogaLookouts.com.

Chattanooga returns to AT&T Field Thursday night to open its final five-game homestand of the regular season against Montgomery at 7:15 p.m. ET.
